My Story. My Journey. Your growth.
"Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do." - Brené Brown
About Me
My name is Maria Margarita (Mary Margaret in English) but my friends and family call me “Maggie". I’m Cuban-American, so I’m loud, I’m proud, and most importantly I’m authentically and unapologetically myself.
Chances are if you chanced upon my site you are looking for someone just like me. Someone who can guide you through life’s turbulent moments in the throes of a divorce. Someone who can keep you grounded while telling it like it is. Someone who will listen to you, yet give you your space when you need it. Someone who gets what it’s like to be a single mom, together with all the emotional and financial stressors that come with it. And someone who’ll give you the information and advice you need (even though you may not yet know you need it). I also hope that we can laugh together, because one day you’ll look back at this moment and realize you are exactly where you dreamt you’d be all those many months ago. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow. Promise!
Like a caterpillar goes through a metamorphosis to become a butterfly, and a Phoenix rises from the ashes, so did I, and so WILL you. I’m here to share my SISU with you.
I’m here to empower women to live their best lives, the lives they were meant to live, and may not even know they can live (maybe because they never have). My mantra is: The best is yet to come! I have the skills, knowledge, experience and resources to get you through these difficult times. This is my mitzvah, because if I can help just one woman out there reading this and give her hope, then I’m grateful in knowing I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.

My Journey
A little bit about how I got here. In college I majored in pre-law and political science, before switching to Psychology. I decided to follow the law, and after 20 years in the legal field doing estate planning and probate, I was presented with an opportunity I could not pass up. I was offered a job in banking, and transitioned into a totally different field working as a corporate fiduciary, where I climbed up the corporate ladder and became a Vice President of a global trust company in a short period of time. I was completely outside of my comfort zone, and possessed a “deer in the headlights look” for nearly a year. Not kidding! But I proved I could reinvent myself. My life seemed perfect, right? So wrong!
Somewhere in the middle of my professional life, I married a lawyer, and even took some time off to be a stay at home mom. Still a seemingly picture-perfect life, right? Until BAM! – divorce hit me like a rogue wave on a calm summer cruise. Blindsided doesn't even begin to describe it.
Truth be told, I did not choose to get divorced at 51 and with a minor child, but I didn’t have much of a choice. And during the process, I realized that it was far better for me to be alone than in an abusive and toxic relationship. As my mother (who is no longer with us) used to say to me: “Mejor sola, que mal acompanada” (Tr: It’s better to be alone than in bad company!). No kidding!
After my tumultuous divorce, still battered and broken, I set out to figure out what the hell happened, what went wrong. Was it something I did? How did things just “fall apart”? When? But listen up, because that's when the real magic happened. My epiphany! Instead of drowning in the drama, I did what I do best – I reinvented myself. Fueled by "Sisu," a Finnish term loosely translated as a spirit of never giving up, going beyond one’s mental or physical capacity. I embarked on a soul-searching odyssey. Self-help books became my bible, seminars my therapy sessions, and introspection my superpower. I wasn't just healing; I was discovering the badass Rubia I always had within. You name it I did it or studied it, and spent a small fortune while doing it. But something amazing came of this, I re-discovered my faith and in doing so is when I discovered “my me, my why, and my purpose”.
I realized that my journey wasn't meant to be a solo act. As I emerged stronger, I felt a calling to uplift others facing similar storms. I began to mentor women who were going through the same experience as me. That led me to my going on to obtain my certification as a relationship and lifestyle coach. I proved, yet again, that you’re never too old to reinvent yourself. But don’t take my word for it, feel free to read testimonials from other fabulous ladies I’ve mentored in the past few years. And let me tell you, witnessing their transformations lit a fire in my soul.
My blog is the Badass Rubia blog, because I believe there is a little “badass” within all of us.
